Halo: Combat Evolved Review

Halo had a lot of strengths for a game of it’s time. However, it also maintained a lot of glitches and bugs that made it into the final product. Is this particularly surprising? Not really. It is really the fault of Bungie? Also no. Things like the twitchy vehicle physics and lack of adequate indication that you we’re getting shot at (Looking at you, PC), it was a bit hard to play any sort of multiplayer with it. The campaign played great, save for the few times where Ghosts and Banshees would sort of just squish me upon the slightest of hints of touching me. Much improved in later games, but still needed work in the first one. To be expected, and really a minor takeaway from an otherwise great game.

Also of note was the sometimes poor campaign map design- oftentimes featuring a mass of identical-looking hallways and corridors that, while useful for campaign purposes, became a bit of a chore to traverse sometimes.

Halo was a completely different take on things when it came out. The epic scenery and environments along with the art direction was a fresh perspective on a genre. The technology of the UNSC, Covenant, and Forerunners we’re all strikingly different, and some of the best times I had in that game, visually speaking, we’re seeing the startling contrast between the three and how that reflected their own cultures and ideologies. Amazing for a game of it’s time.
